Why Do We Shout In Anger?
A saint asked his disciples, ‘Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?’
Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.’
‘But, why to shout when the other person is just next to you?’ asked the saint. ‘Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you’re angry?’
Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint.
Finally he explained, ‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.’
Then the saint asked, ‘What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, why? Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small…’
The saint continued, ‘When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.’
MORAL: When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance each other more, else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.

Sri Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is stated in the Svetasvatara Upanishad (6.8) “The Supreme Lord has multipotencies, which act so perfectly that all consciousness, strength and activity are being directed solely by His will”. The material world, where we are now living, is called bahir-anga-sakti, the external energy of Krishna. Krishna explains in the Bhagavad-Gita (9.10): “Under My superintendence the material energy is working”. Apart from the material, external energy, there is another energy – the internal energy. By the internal energy the spiritual world is being manifested. As the material world is manipulated under the external energy, the spiritual world is conducted by the internal potency. That internal potency, called the Hladini Sakti, is Srimati Radharani.
In CC Adi 1.5 it is said “The loving affairs of Sri Radha and Krishna are transcendental manifestations of the Lord’s internal pleasure-giving potency. Although Radha and Krishna are one in Their identity, They separated Themselves eternally”. Srimati Radharani, as the highest devotee of Sri Krishna, derives the greatest pleasure in serving Him. She is the origin of all the Gopis and of all the Goddesses of Fortune (Lakshmi devi) who are engaged in the service of the Lord. She is the mainstay, the ideal and the ultimate refuge of all devotees embarking on the path of devotional service. Without first getting the mercy of Srimati Radharani it is impossible to even approach Sri Krishna.
The Hare Krishna maha-mantra is in fact a prayer to Srimati Radharani. The word ‘Hare’ is derived from ‘Hara’ which denotes the internal energy or Hladini Sakti of Krishna. This is none other that Srimati Radharani. When one is chanting the maha-mantra, one is saying: “O Krishna ! O Radha !! Please engage me in your devotional service”. Krishna is difficult to approach directly, but He is bhakta-vatsala, always eager to please His devotees. Thus the mood of a devotee is to invoke the compassion of Srimati Radharani Who then recommends the devotee to Sri Krishna. Since Krishna is easily pleased by Srimati Radharani, He then readily accepts the devotee in His service.
Vrindavan Lila
When the Lord descends, He is invariably accompanied by His loving associates. Five thousand years when Sri Krishna descended in His original form, as a cowherd boy in Vrindavan, Srimati Radharani accompanied Him in Her original form. She appeared exactly two weeks after the appearance of Sri Krishna on the eighth day of the waning moon (ashtami). Srimati Radharani was found on a lotus flower by Vrashabhanu and his wife Kirtida near the village of Barsana, a few miles away from Nandagrama. It is said that Srimati Radharani first opened Her eyes only when Sri Krishna appeared before Her. Until that time Her eyes were closed.
Understanding the mellows of the relationship between Krishna and Radha is impossible from the mundane perspective. Understanding madhurya-rasa (devotion at the platform of intimacy), which is the highest level of relationship of a devotee with Krishna, is only possible in the most elevated stages of bhakti where there is not even a tinge of material contamination. Therefore Svarupa Damodara Gosvami has written: “The loving affairs of Radha and Krishna are not ordinary, material loving affairs, although they appear like that. Rascals and fools misunderstand Krishna to be an ordinary man. They do not know Krishna’s transcendental nature. They try to imitate Krishna’s rasa-lila, His dancing with the Gopis”. There is no offense greater than this. Devotees starting on the path of bhakti must carefully avoid such offenses. They must simply pray to Srimati Radharani, as their most compassionate Mother, for mercy, for bhakti and for an opportunity to serve Sri Krishna.
Qualities of Srimati Radharani
As explained in Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (Nectar of Devotion), Krishna possesses sixty-four transcendental qualities. Srimati Radharani has twenty-five transcendental qualities, but She can control even Krishna by them. Her transcendental qualities are as follows: (1) She is sweetness personified; (2) She is a fresh young girl; (3) Her eyes are always moving; (4) She is always brightly smiling; (5) She possesses all auspicious marks on Her body; (6) She can agitate Krishna by the flavor of Her person; (7) She is expert in the art of singing; (8) She can speak very nicely and sweetly; (9) She is expert in presenting feminine attractions; (10) She is modest and gentle; (11) She is always very merciful; (12) She is transcendentally cunning; (13) She knows how to dress nicely; (14) She is always shy; (15) She is always respectful; (16) She is always patient; (17) She is very grave; (18) She is enjoyed by Krishna; (19) She is always situated on the highest devotional platform; (20) She is the abode of love of the residents of Gokula; (21) She can give shelter to all kinds of devotees; (22) She is always affectionate to superiors and inferiors; (23) She is always obliged by the dealings of Her associates, (24) She is the greatest amongst Krishna’s girl friends; (25) She always keeps Krishna under Her control.
Krishna means ‘all attractive’, since He attracts every one to Him. But Srimati Radharani attracts even Krishna. Although Krishna says vedaham samatitani – “I know everything” – He fails to understand Radharani. Krishna is acyuta (inconceivable), but for Him Radharani is inconceivable. Radharani is so great. Krishna thought, “I am full. I am complete in every respect, but still I want to understand Radharani.” This question obliged Krishna to accept the propensities of Radharani to understand Himself. So five hundred years ago Krishna appeared as Caitanya Mahaprabhu, in the mood of Srimati Radharani and with Her golden complexion, as His own greatest devotee. Krishna did this to understand the depth of devotion of Srimati Radharani.
Mercy of Srimati Radharani
Srimati Radharani is the ideal maha-bhagvat. As the greatest devotee, She is also the most compassionate. She is unable to bear the suffering of the souls trapped in the material world. The word “aradhaya” (prayers) is derived from “Radha” and means “worshippable”. Similarly the word “aparadha” (offenses) means “against Radha”. When one performs devotional service, one is pleasing Srimati Radharani and when commits Vaishnava aparadha against Krishna or His devotees, one is offending Radharani. Srimati Radharani is the guardian, the mentor and the benefactor of all aspiring devotees. When a soul starts to inquire about Krishna, Srimati Radharani is most pleased and takes charge of his devotional advancements. As one makes progress, one continues to invoke the mercy of Srimati Radharani and when She is pleased, Krishna is automatically pleased.
All glories to Srimati Radharani !!

~ KRISHNA’S PASTIMES PART 100 ~
Hare Krishna!!! PAMHO, AGTSP and AGTSG&G.
Crossing over Maya (illusion) is sometimes compared to crossing an ocean. At the time of death the conditioned soul has to transmigrate to another material body, and even if he is born in a higher planet, he still has to suffer repeated birth and death.
To cross the limits of this ocean of samsara,( the cycle of repeated births and deaths) he has to go back to Godhead. But this is very difficult, because any material desires, whether sinful or pious, will plunge the conditioned soul back into samsara.
However, Lord Krishna makes the process easy. In the Bhagavad-gita (7.14) He states, ” This divine energy of mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”
…Continued from last time…Akrura then thought, ” When Krishna and Balarama are pleased with my prayers, certainly They will take my hand, receive me within Their homes and offer me all kinds of respectable hospitalities, and They will surely ask me of the activities of Kamsa and his friends.”
In this way Akrura meditated on Sri Krishna on his journey from Mathura. He reached Vrndavana by the end of the day. Akrura passed the whole journey without knowing how long it took. When he reached Vrndavana, the sun was setting.
As soon as he entered the boundary of Vrndavana, he saw the footprints of the cows and Lord Krishna’s footprints, impressed with the signs of His sole, the flag, trident, thunderbolt, and lotus flower. Upon seeing the footprints of Sri Krishna, Akrura immediately jumped down from the chariot, out of respect.
He became overwhelmed with the symptoms of ecstasy; he wept, and his body trembled. Out of extreme jubilation upon seeing the dust touched by the lotus feet of Sri Krishna, Akrura fell flat on his face and began to roll on the ground.
Akrura journey to Vrndavana is exemplary. One who intends to visit Vrndavana should follow the ideal footsteps of Akrura and always think of the pastimes and activities of the Lord.
As one reaches the boundary of Vrndavana, he should immediately smear the the dust of Vrndavana over his body without thinking of his material position and prestige…More next time…
So ” Always remember Krishna and never forget Krishna!!!” Your not so humble servant of the servant, sudarshan chakra das.

Probadana Swaraswati Thakur one of our ancient rasa Acharyas described a essential quality of Radharani in Radha Rasa Shudanidi or his other book Nectar Moon of Lord Caitanya. She is a multitasked personality with only two essential tasks that is of any interest to her. She has one eye on Krishna and one eye on seeing to the welfare of others less fortunate than her- this means as far as devotion is concerned, everyone else. Krishna liked her mood so much he took it the extreme limit and brought into manifestation his eternal form as Lord Caitanya and demonstrated practically this same mood and both satisfied Himself by tasting the limit of spiritual love for Himself and all the living entities by distributing these valuable remnants to feed the poor unfortunates in this world.
Radharani keeps her focus in life in this way spontaneously and as a practical teaching for us we must act in this way with a little force in the beginning to purify our selves or actually allow Krishna to purify us by keeping our focus on his Bhakti potency which is always at hand via the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of Krishna etc. The formula of a bonafide spiritual master is in essence this. He disciplines the disciple to do these two things in order to purify them and when the disciple is ripe he spontaneously relishes his relationship increasingly with Krishna with one eye or focus and with the other out of compassion acts for the welfare of others by teaching the immense and very confidentially secret value of developing loving devotion to God (Radha and Krishna).
Our sadhna practice designed by the spiritual master are in essence various means of engaging our attention on remembering Krishna and avoiding the pitfalls of certain activities that facilitate our forgetting Krishna-most of us disciples are not yet qualified to do this with unswerving deviation due to lack of spiritual taste so he puts us to work doing practical service in the field as his person assistants compassionately acting for the welfare of others even though we ourselves usually don’t have any compassion for others manifesting yet in our heart due to our undeveloped of Love for God.
Practically we disciples of a confidential servitor of Krishna, the bonafide spiritual master, must see if we are in line with this formula. Neglecting either part we will be out of balance. For example many disciples now days in this kali yuga are affected by the mode of passion. If this passionate energy is not engaged in doing practical service for Gurus mission of delivering the conditioned souls then it will create more karmic bondage and lead to more passionate fruitive activities which naturally deviates and incapacitates us from making progress towards the treasure of remembering Krishna with loving devotion. On the other hand if we just work all day long for the Guru without engaging the various sadhna practices which assist us in remembering Krishna our work will take on a mundane quality. Following in the footsteps of residents of Vrndavan means to do what they do spontaneously with some discipline at first. They work for their lively hood and the welfare of others and at the same time remember Krishna in various ways. Radharani teaches her parrot to recite Krishna’s glories. Mother Yasoda composes beautiful simple songs about her beloved Krishna. Since most of us don’t have the developed love of God we cannot compose such devotional scriptures spontaneously therefore we must hear, sing and recite the mahamantra and compositions of other authorized bhaktas who had love for the Supreme Lord and purify our selves by eating their remnants in this way. In this way Bhakti Yoga can be a very strait forward and simple process to both understand and to practice but without connection and service to a bonafide spiritual master we cannot follow this path of special mercy and grace.

The dice game & the theft of the flute
While wandering through the forest of the Hemanta [autumn] season, where the moonlit nights become longer and the sunlit days shorter, Sri Radha shivered from the cold. Sri Krishna said, “0 Radhika, quickly enter into the abode of My heart, where You will be sheltered from the cold by the warmth of My eagerness for You.”
When Sri Krishna pulled Radha close to Him, She protested, saying, “Na! Na!” In the loving struggle which ensued, His sash loosened and His flute fell to the ground, as if angry. Beautiful Lalita saw the crown opulence of Vraja’s prince lying neglected on the ground and said, “0 hard, cold flute, whose only quality is the beauty of your song, full of faults (holes) and a great disturbance to the three worlds, you will now get your just dues!” Unbeknown to Sri Krishna, who was intoxicated with the mystifying presence of Sri Radha, Lalita hid the fortunate flute in the dark shelter of her thick braid.
Happily wandering through the Hemanta forest with Radhika, Sri Krishna observed the many winter flowers, vines, birds, and animals. To shelter Them from the cold, Vrinda-devi, the keeper of the forest, joyfully presented Them with small winter coats of crimson, tawny, blue, and golden colors.
Reaching peaceful Radha-kunda, Sri Radha, desiring to vindicate the abuse suffered by Her friends at the band of the flute, challenged, Govindaji to a game of dice. Unable to resist the challenge, Sri Hari sat down on a crystal dais facing Radhika and Latita-devi, while Madhumangala acted as His advisor in the game.
Sri Radha was the goddess of victory, Jaya-Sri. Even with guidance of the infallible Madhumangala, what hope was there for Sri Krishna to throw the high score? When He first lost His Kaustubha gem, Hari found consolation in seeing it hanging around Sri Radha’s neck. At the next throw, His pearl necklace was lost, but He considered the loss insignificant. However, when He staked His flute against Sri Radha’s vina and lost it, He felt in His sash and saw that His prized possession was gone.
When Sri Krishna asked Madhumanga1a for His flute, he replied with pride, “Where am I an ascetic of the forest, and where are You roaming around without purpose? Where am I religion personified, and where are You attached to all kinds of frivolous conduct? Your Kaustubha gem is already lost, and now You have also lost the enchanting weapon of Your flute! Left to Your fate, You can now blissfully sing the ri ri song wherever You go!”
Extremely disturbed by the turn of events, Sri Krishna abandoned the game of dice to locate His friend, the flute. Suspecting one or more of the gopis as the thieves, He tried to discover the felon by sweet words, threats, and close inspection. It was all to no avail.
Taunting Him with a smile on her reddish lips, Lalita devi said, “Ho, Ho! Oh, once holder of the flute! You are now up to Your neck in the sticky swamp of embarrassment. Now that Your friend, the flute, has left You, how will You attract the gopis into the forest at night? How will You now pass Your abundant leisure hours, 0 son of Vraja’s king?”
Casting a glance of disregard to Lalita, all the while smiling at Sri Radha, Madhava [Krishna] turned to Madhumangala and said, “0 omniscient king of brahmanas, having studied astrology, please look in your charts to see who took my Murali [flute].” Performing achamana, sitting in trance, and meditating on the current constellations, Madhumangala said, “0 friend, my infallible conclusion is that hot-tempered Lalita took it.”
Without His noticing it, Sri Radha came behind Lalita and took the flute from her hand and hid it in Her own braid. Then, as Sri Krishna was about to search an angry Lalita, a forest nymph and servant of Vrinda-devi appeared and said, “Jatila is arriving at Surya-kunda!”
When many pots of water are thrown on a fire, it naturally goes out. Similarly, when the name “Jatila” entered the ears of the gopis, their happiness in Sri Krishna’s association vanished. Abandoning heir blissful sports, Sri Krishna and His girlfriends, their eyes fearful, hastened to see Jatila, Radharani’s mean mother-in-law.
The many wonderful lies Sri Radha spoke to Jatila, explaining Her delay in worshipping the sun-god greatly satisfied Surya-deva, who was overjoyed at the darshana [audience] of his worshipable Deities, Radha-Krishna. While Radhika pledged Her innocence, Sri Krishna, in the guise of a pure brahmana, sober, renounced, and learned, looked on, a charming smile on His lips.
The many mantras chanted by Sri Krishna, the king of brahmanas, contained such equivocal meaning that the sun became perplexed and, fixed in the sky, pondered their deep significance to no avail. At the conclusion of the ceremony, wearing a white robe, holding the
scriptures and durva grass in His hands, Sri Krishna instructed Radha, “0 most chaste girl, just say bhavaste namah [I offer my obeisances], perform parikrama [circumambulation] of Your priest, and then offer Your obeisances with Your forehead touching the ground.”
As Sri Radhika offered Her respects to the brahmana Sri Krishna, His flute fell from Her hair, making a hollow sound. The intricate network of lie’s that She concocted at that moment was sufficient to bewilder even Brhaspati, the guru of the demigods. Finally, Sri Radhika placated Jatila by explaining, “Arye! Today this flute fell from the slope of Govardhana Hill, and because it is known to give the gopis of Vraja much distress, I planned to throw it in the Yamuna. Surely there can be no harm in that?”
Promising to take it out of Vrindavana and dispose of it in a faraway place, Sri Krishna, still disguised as a brahmana, regained His flute from the hand of Jatila. Giving her assurance that Radha was a goddess of fortune and the emblem of chastity, Govinda bade farewell to the ladies of Vraja. While stroking His dear flute, Sri Krishna consoled it with many sweet words and then replaced it in His sash. While returning home, He held the hand of His dear friend Madhumangala and continued to look behind Him until the gopis completely passed out of sight.

RESULT OF FAILING TO KNOW KRISHNA
By Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandana dasa)
Failing to have enough faith in Lord Krishna, or in getting to know Him, is not quite the same as you might find in some other faiths or religions wherein they say you will go to eternal hell if you are a non-believer, or you are an infidel worthy of death, or whatever. But failing to investigate Him and realize what is our final destination is considered a waste of this particular life. Lord Krishna Himself explains:
“One may be well versed in all the transcendental literature of the Vedas, but if he fails to be acquainted with the Supreme, then it must be concluded that all of his education is like the burden of a beast or like one’s keeping a cow without milking capacity.” (Bhag.11.11.18)
“Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; those who worship ancestors go to the ancestors; and those who worship Me will live with Me.” (Bg.9.25)
In this way we can begin to see the futility of following some materialistic path or a secondary spiritual method without the process for reaching an understanding of Lord Krishna. “Among all the eternal, conscious beings, there is One who supplies the needs of everyone else. The wise who worship Him in His abode attain everlasting peace. Others cannot.” (Katha Upanishad 2.2.13)
In this way, a person is allowed to proceed through life in the way he or she wants. Lord Krishna allows each person to develop in their own way, and to continue wandering throughout the universe and through various activities until they begin to wonder about the purpose of life, or become ready for a deep spiritual path. Materialistic activities are not the way to find everlasting peace, and most of us need to discover that for ourselves. However, a person cannot be helped until he or she is ready. So, until then, they may be offered the spiritual knowledge they need, but they must decide for themselves how much of it they wish to utilize. Just as when Sri Krishna spoke the whole Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna, at the end of it He asked Arjuna what he wished to do. He had to make up his own mind. He was not forced to do anything. In the same way, we can only offer this knowledge for the benefit of humanity, and they can decide what they wish to do, or how long they wish to continue their existence in the material worlds.
“They are truly ignorant who, while imprisoned within the ceaseless flow of this world’s material qualities, fail to know You, the Supreme Soul of all that be, as their ultimate, sublime destination. Because of their ignorance, the entanglement of material work forces such souls to wander in the cycle of birth and death.” (Bhag.10.85.15)
Therefore, regardless of what else we do, we should recognize how advantageous it is to add the process of engaging in devotional service to Lord Krishna in this lifetime. We may not even be able to become perfect at it, but it nonetheless accelerates our spiritual development. Otherwise, regardless of what else we have accomplished materially, our life remains incomplete. “Caught in the grip of ignorance, self-proclaimed experts consider themselves learned authorities. They wander about this world befooled, like the blind leading the blind.” (Katha Upanishad 1.2.5)
It is only through this spiritual education that we can understand our real identity and transcendental nature beyond the body and all material activities. Without that, we remain ignorant of our true potential and the final shelter that is awaiting us in the spiritual domain.

A child does not ask for the nourishment, mother who feeds and clothes the child brings upon its care. As the child grows, its demands increase. However, the child is still not equipped to procure its needs. Although the child knows what it wants, it is the prerogative of the caretaker to provide the demanding child with its wants. The child as it enters the adulthood, loses the luxury of being cared for by others. The adult gets what he/she works for.

The process of spiritual advancement is analogous to the above. God pulls His child to Himself and provides the infant with the necessities without being asked for. The later stages involve the growing child command for its wants. God gives. Smilingly. This stage is the audacious lag of the journey, every prayer answered, every benefit awarded. Soon this stage should end. The realization dawns once the power of temporary bliss wanes away and the longing for something bigger begins to take a shape. How is the intangible realized? The inexplicable mastered?
Will Hari provide? “If there be my Hari (Lord), He will feed me on my cot”. This proverb is only true in respect of food and clothing, but if anyone trusting in this sits quiet and do nothing in spiritual matters, he will be ruined. One has to exert himself to his utmost for attaining self realization. The more he endeavors, the better for him.
Mercy of God sees one safely through the stages of infant and the growing. Constant contemplation on the nature of the self, in whatever name it is called, is the endeavor for the adult. Yes, the adult has to work for it and gets what he/she works for!

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Prabhupada says: We have no other business than to obey the orders of
God. God says that you preach this confidential philosophy of Krsna
consciousness everywhere. So because we are trying to love God, we have got
some affection and love for God; therefore we are so much eager to spread
Krsna consciousness. Otherwise, “It is Krsna’s business. Why should we
bother about Him?” No. Because we love Krsna, and He is happy that His
message is being spread, that is our happiness also, that we are trying to
serve God, tacitly, without any doubt. So we also feel happy, and God says
that He will be very happy if you do this. So this is reciprocation. This is
religion. Religion is no sentiment. Actual realization of God, actual
carrying out or executing the orders of God, then God is happy, we are
happy, and our progress of life is secure.

Question: Origin and Purpose of Hare Krishna

RadheyKrsna!
What are the origins of Hare Krishna?
“The Supreme Lord Himself is the origin of the Hare Krishna process. The Hare Krishna process of connecting with the Supreme Person through pure, loving devotion is known as Krishna consciousness and has no beginning point in history. It has existed as long as God has existed. It is taught in the Vedas, the world’s original and oldest scriptures and is also presented in an elementary form in the Bible and the Koran. All the modern day religions are simply derivatives of the original Krishna consciousness system of unalloyed devotion to the Supreme Person.
“The purpose of the Hare Krishna movement is to enable those who practice it to become perfect in love of God. Plus the movement wants to awaken the entire to this most amazing original system of spiritual purification, so that everyone can be saved from all varieties of suffering conditions.
Can you think of anyone specifically who played a vital role in bringing Hare Krishna to the United States, if so how did they do that?
“That person is my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He came to America in 1965 from India on the order of his spiritual master, and by 1966 he had attracted a small band of disciples in Manhattan’s lower east side. He then dispatched them to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world and quickly the Hare Krishna Movement became world famous.
“The answer is that it has had a tremendous impact. Millions of people have heard the Hare Krishna mantra and heard of the Hare Krishna movement. Future historians will note that the introduction of the Hare Krishna in the United States was one of the major turning points in world history.
What successes and failures have you noticed in the U.S.’s interpretation of Hare Krishna?
”The Hare Krishna people in the USA and throughout the world do not interpret the Hare Krishna process. We are following it in its original pure form that was taught by Lord Krishna in the 5,000 years old scripture known as the Bhagavad-gita. Those who strictly follow it become all successful in their lives. The only failures we have seen are in cases of those who tried to invent their own so-called version of Krishna consciousness without strictly follow the instructions given in the Bhagavad-gita.
Are there any certain locations of great importance to Hare Krishna, any in the U.S.?
“We have hundreds of locations all over the world that are of great i important including many throughout the USA.

Christ and Krishna, or Christna
We have been a constant controversy because in a greedy, selfish world pure God-consciousness will always be controversial. This is why they crucified Jesus.
How would you compare Hare Krishna to western religion, such as Protestant Christianity?
“Hare Krishna is not another religious sect. The Krishna consciousness process is the essence of religion, religion in its original, pure form before it was divided into sects. A purely Krishna conscious person is the best Christian, the best Jew, the best Muslim, and the best Hindu.
Besides spiritual matters, how is Hare Krishna involved in its local community?
“The practice of Krishna consciousness has a more powerful benefit on our local communities than anything else. When we water the root a tree all the leaves and branches are nourished. When we feed our belly the entire body becomes fed. Similarly when we channel our loving devotion to Lord Sri Krishna we give best loving service to our communities and the entire world. When we become properly situated spiritually everything material becomes automatically properly adjusted.
Any other interesting facts about Hare Krishna you would like to share?
“Any other interesting facts about Hare Krishna you would like to share? ”The answer is that there is nothing more amazing and interesting than Krishna consciousness. It brings one into direct communion with God Himself, the source of all existence, twenty-four hours a day.

Answers According to the Vedic Version:
Question: Krishna, the Supreme Renunciate?
In explaining the opulences of Krishna–how can it be understood that Krishna is supreme in the opulence of renunciation?
Answer: Yes, Confirmed by Bhismadeva
“When in the Rajasuya Yajna assembly it was being decided who should be the president of the assembly and Krishna’s name was mentioned, Sisupala objected on the grounds that Krishna was an enjoyer of women. But then Bhismadeva, who is the celebrated as the greatest brahmacari, the greatest renunciate, stated that there is no greater renunciate than Krishna. He said that if he had been surrounded by the beautiful gopi girls as Krishna was in the forest of Vrindavan during the night of the rasa, that he would surely have become sexually agitated. He stated that since Krishna did not become agitated and did not engage in sex with any of the gopis that Krishna was a greater renunciate than he. We do not find any mention of pregnancy or abortion in Krishna’s pastimes with the gopis. This is one example of Krishna’s supremacy in renunciation.”

Srisita ram laxman hanuman
Ram Navami (IAST Rāma-navamī) is a Hindu Vaishnava holiday, celebrating of the birthday of Rama, a divine figure in Hinduism[1]. It falls on the Navami, ninth day of the Chaitra month of Hindu lunar year, thus named Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami
In the Ramayana, Dasarath, then king of Ayodhya, is believed to have had three wives named Kaushalya, Sumithra and Kaikeyi. Their greatest worry was that they had no male children, and so they had no heir to the throne. Rishi Vasistha suggests him to perform Puthra Kamesti Yagna, through which he can have a desired child. He also tells him to bring Maharshi Rushya Shrunga to perform this Yagna for him. Immediately King Dasharath gives his consent, and heads to Maharshi Rushya Shrunga’s ashram, to get him. Maharshi agrees and will accompany Dasharath to Ayodhya (Capital of Avadha) and performs the yagna. As the result of yagna, Yagneshwar appears and hands Dasarath a bowl of Payasam and asks him to give it to his wives. Dasharath gives one half of the payasam to his elder wife Kausalya, and another half to his younger wife Kaikeyi. They both give half of their portions to Sumithra. After few days all three Queens conceive. On the ninth day (Navami) of Chaithra Masa (first month in Hindu calendar), at noon Kaushlya gives birth to Lord Sri Ram, Kaikeyi gives birth to Bharath, and Sumithra to twin boys, Lakshman and Shatrughan.
Lord Ram is the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who takes birth on earth when Adharma over rules Dharma. He protects all his devotees by vanquishing the roots of Adharma. Lord Ram was born on earth to destroy the demon named Ravan.

A ‘devotee’ goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and
complained that it made no sense to go to the Temple .
‘I’ve gone for 30 years now, he wrote, and in that time I have heard
something like 3,000 mantras.
But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I
think I’m wasting my time and the Gurus are wasting theirs by giving
services at all.
This started a real controversy in the ‘Letters to the Editor’ column,
much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone
wrote this clincher: I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my
wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot
recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know
this… They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my
work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically
dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to the Temple for nourishment, I
would be spiritually dead today!
When you are DOWN to nothing…. God is UP to something! Faith sees the
invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!
Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Answers According to the Vedic Version:
Question: Who Made Sin?
When every thing is made by God, and God only governs our every action and thought, and we are here to pay for our sins and good things that we have done in our previous births, then at the very beginning He made us do sins, and wrong things, and then He made this process of hell and heaven. If He wanted He could have made every thing good in this world with no hate revenge lust etc. It was He who created pain.
Answer: We Did.
You are foolishly thinking that God has created our painful situation in this material existence. This is a completely wrong understanding. I am again and again seeing how many people are trying to blame God for their suffering condition in this material existence. Instead of owning up to the responsibility for having made the wrong choice, they try to blame God for their predicament. This is not the way to become free from the sufferings of material existence. Such an attitude of blaming God simply prolongs one’s suffering situation in this material world.
Everything is made by God. That’s fact. But He is not a despotic dictator. He is our loving father. He is not orchestrating the thoughts and actions of His beloved children. Rather He gives them the free will to engage their thoughts and actions in His service or to rebel against Him and engage their thoughts and actions independently for a life of sense gratification.
Those who choose to lovingly offer their thoughts and actions completely in the Lord’s service experience an eternity full of love, knowledge, and bliss. And those who choose to rebel against the Lord suffer an eternity of hate, ignorance, and misery. The good news is that there is no such thing as being eternally damned. All those who rebelled have the free choice to be reinstated in their original position full of bliss, knowledge, and love in the unlimitedly sweet spiritual world. All they have to do is agree to surrender themselves fully unto Lord Sri Krishna.

How to get rid of material enery’s control ?
!!Hare Krsna!!
!!All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!!
Dear Mataji and Prabhuji,
Fallen souls like me – always keep saying that – We cannot get rid of
this material energy. and Most of the time we are in material illusion
- we think that “I am independent”. That is the perfect example of
illusion .
Whenever the sun comes , the darkness goes away. Similarly in my life
whenever i read Srila Prabhupada’s lectures and books the darkness of
ignorance goes away. and that time i remember the Krsna’s Words from
Bhavad Gita in Chapter 10- Text 10-11.
tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give
the understanding by which they can come to Me.
tesam evanukampartham
aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho
jnana-dépena bhasvata
To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with
the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.
In these above two texts – Krsna has promised that if we keep on doing
devotional services with love – Krsna will help us to reach them . and
I really believe in this promise of Krsna. Whenever – I am in any
doubt – Madusudana – Killer of Madhu Demon – shows me the way in form
of Srila Prabhupada and kills my all doubt immediatly.
In His lecture with Indian’s Richest family “The Birlas” – Srila
prabhupada explained few things very wonderfully.
Srila Prabhupada states that We should always practice to give up the
control of the material energy. But yeah make sure – we are not trying
to control that materail energy. That We cannot do. That is even not
possible. But for sure not top become under the control.
That is very simple method: mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti
te.
Just like if you become honest, if you are not criminal, then there is
no police control–police may be there. But as soon as you become
criminal, you come under the control of police.
Similarly our business is, as Caitanya Mahaprabhu has explained, and
everywhere in the sastra, and actually we are so, we are eternal
servant of God, or Krsna. This is our real position. Caitanya
Mahaprabhu has said, jivera svarupa haya nitya krsna dasa. But our
disease is instead of becoming dasa, we are trying to become the
master of the prakrti. This is called materialistic way of life. This
is called dishonesty . So That time maeterial energy comes as a police
and then try to caught us in her energy.
But If we will work in honesty and will realize our eternal
relationship with Krsna . Then automatically We will start serving
Krsna . Offcourse for honest people – No any police (material energy)
is required.
So BE HONEST – SERVE KRSNA – GET RID OF MATERIAL ENERGY.
!!Hare Krsna!!

“One should chant the Holy Name of the Lord in a humble state of mind,
thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street. One should be
more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and
ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can
chant the Holy Name of the Lord constantly.”

Once a sculptor in a village made a beautiful idol of a goddess and thought of selling it at a good price in the city. So he loaded the idol on his donkey and started towards the city. When he was going through the village, the villagers bowed in front of the idol as it looked like a real goddess. Whichever street he crossed, a crowd would bow in front of the idol.
But a strange thing happened. The donkey, which was carrying the idol, thought that he was special and that was the reason why people were bowing to him. He was thrilled with his newfound respect.
Soon the sculptor returned after selling the idol. While he was crossing the village, the donkey stopped in the middle of the road, expecting a warm welcome. But nobody paid attention to him. The donkey felt insulted and started braying, so much so, that the villagers drove him away.
The same mistake, what the donkey did, is what most of us do. When we are on the divine path of self-realization, with God’s grace, a glow enters our demeanor and we stand out in the crowd. People respect such persons and often bow in respect. But we should realize that people are bowing not to us but to that glimpse of God whom they realize resides within us. So the credit of this respect goes, solely to God, not to us. If we start taking the credit, we cross the thin line of demarcation and enter into an area of false ego, which God dislikes most.
The basic difference between material and devotional lifestyle is that, in material life the more we progress, the more ego we develop. In a devotional lifestyle, the more we progress, the more ego we shed.
Purport:
The person in material consciousness is convinced by false ego that he is the doer of everything. He does not know that the mechanism of the body is produced by material nature, which works under the supervision of the Supreme Lord. The materialistic person has no knowledge that ultimately he is under the control of Krishna. The person in false ego takes all credit for doing everything independently, and that is the symptom of his nescience.

VEDIC THOUGHT
“I do not pray for heavenly pleasure. I do not even aspire for liberation. Simply let the nectar of Lord Krsna’s transcendental pastimes flood my ears, day after day.”
“Therefore the essence of all religious principles in the age of kali is the sacrifice of chanting of holy names of the lord one can not be delivered by following any other religious principles.”
If a devotee follows the instructions of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he lives in the company of the Lord. Wherever he lives, he converts that place into Vrndavana and Navadvipa. This means that materialism cannot touch him. This is the secret of success for one advancing in Krsna consciousness.
The Vedas are My eternal transcendental sound incarnation. Therefore the Vedas are s’abda-brahma. In this world, the brâhmanas thoroughly study all the Vedas, and because they assimilate the Vedic conclusions, they are also to be considered the Vedas personified. The brâhmanas are situated in the supreme transcendental mode of nature–sattva-guna. Because of this, they are fixed in mind control [s'ama], sense control [dama], and truthfulness [satya]. They describe the Vedas in their original sense, and out of mercy [anugraha] they preach the purpose of the Vedas to all conditioned souls. They practice penance [tapasya] and tolerance [titikshâ], and they realize the position of the living entity and the Supreme Lord [anubhava]. These are the eight qualifications of the brâhmanas. Therefore among all living entities, no one is superior to the brâhmanas.

Celebrations Continue for a Week
With an immensely strong bonding with Lord Krishna, people of Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate Holi for over a week. Each major Krishna temple celebrates Holi on a different day.
Of immense interest for the tourist is the celebrations which take place at the famous Bakai-Bihari Temple at Vrindavan. Drenched in the colours of Holi people can be found totally immersed in the spirit of devotion here.
Another interesting place for Holi celebrations is Gulal-Kund in Braj; a beautiful little lake near Govardhan mountain. Here, the festival is commemorated on a more regular basis. Pilgrims can see the re-enactments of Holi throughout the year at this lake. Local boys, acting in the Krishna-Lila drama troupes re-enact the scenes of Holi for the pilgrims.
So much is the passion of the people here, that they throng these temples every day and get drenched in coloured water…all in the name of the Lord they love so much.
The Legend
The tradition of playing colours on Holi draws its roots from a legend of Radha and Krishna. It is said that young Krishna was jealous of Radha’s fair complexion since he himself was very dark. He narrated his woe to mother Yashoda, who teasingly asked him to colour Radha’s face in which ever colour he wanted. In a mischievous mood, Krishna applied colour on Radha’s face. The tradition of applying colour on one’s beloved is being religiously followed till date.

VEDIC THOUGHTS – BHAGAVAD GITA
One may cleanse himself daily by taking a bath in water, but if one takes a bath even once in the sacred Ganges water of Bhagavad-gita, for him the dirt of material life is altogether vanquished.
(Gita-mahatmya 3)
O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to me, everything rests upon me, as pearl are stung on a thread.
(Lord Sri Krsna- Bhagavad Gita 7.7)
And whoever, at the end of his life quits his body remembering me alone at once attains my nature. Of this there is no doubt.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad Gita 8.5)
I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from me comes remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad gita 15.15)
To those who are constantly devoted to serving me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to me.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad Gita 10.10)
I am the only enjoyer and the object of sacrifice. Those who do not recognize my true transcendental nature, falls down.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad Gita 9.24)
O son of Kunti, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.
(Lord Sri krishna – Bhagavad-gita 2.14)
Just fix your mind upon me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and engage all your intelligence in me. Thus you will live in me always, without a doubt.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad gita 12.8)
I am the only enjoyer and the only object of sacrifice. Those who do not recognize my true transcendental nature fall down.
(Lord Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 9.24)
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 4.9)
For one who sees me everywhere and sees everything in Me, I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to me.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 6.30)
There is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad gita 7.7)
For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 2.20)
As a lamp in a windless place does not waver, so the transcendentalist, whose mind is controlled, remains always steady in his meditation on the transcendent self.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 6.19)
I envy no one, nor am I partial to anyone. I am equal to all. But whoever renders service unto Me in devotion is a friend, is in Me, and I am also a friend to him.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita)
With a single fragment of Myself, I pervade and support this entire universe.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad gita 10.42)
Those who fix their minds on My personal form and are always engaged in worshiping Me with great and transcendental faith are considered by Me to be most perfect.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 12.2)
After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 7.19)
Those who fix their minds on My personal form and are always engaged in worshiping Me with great and transcendental faith are considered by Me to be most perfect.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad gita 12.2)
Whoever knows Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, without doubting, is the knower of everything. He therefore engages himself in full devotional service to Me, O son of Bharata.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 15.19)
What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage.
(Lord Sri Krsna – Bhagavad-gita 2.69)
One who takes shelter of the supreme lord has nothing to fear, even in the midst of the greatest calamity.
(His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada – Bhagavad Gita 1.19 purport)
Religion without philosophy is sentiment, or sometimes fanaticism, while philosophy without religion is mental speculation.
(His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada – Bhagavad-gita As It Is 3.3, Purport)
Compassion for the eternal soul is self-realization.
(His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada – Bhagavad-gita As It Is 2.1, purport)
The sage feels transcendental pleasure in the gradual advancement of spiritual culture, whereas the man in materialistic activities, being asleep to self-realization, dreams of varieties of sense pleasure, feeling sometimes happy and sometimes distressed in his sleeping condition. The introspective man is always indifferent to materialistic happiness and distress. He goes on with his self-realization activities undisturbed by material reactions.
(His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada – Bhagavad-gita As It Is 2.69, Purport)

Every man should act like this: when he meets a person more qualified than himself, he should be very pleased, when he meets someone less qualified than himself, he should be compassionate toward him; and when he meets someone equal to himself, he should make friendship with him. In this way one is never affected by the threefold miseries of the material world.

O my Lord [Krsna], persons who smell the aroma of your lotus feet,
carried by the air of Vedic sound through the holes of the ears,
accepts your devotional service. For them you are never separated from
the lotus of their hearts.

“The materialist thinks that persons engaged in Krsna consciousness
are crazy fellows wasting time by chanting Hare Krsna, but actually he
does not know that he himself is in the darkest region of craziness
because of accepting his body as permanent.”
Pure devotional service in Krsna consciousness cannot be had even by
pious activity in hundreds and thousands of lives. It can be obtained
only by paying one price—that is intense greed to obtain it. If it is
available somewhere, one must purchase it without delay.

Once a devotee asked Srila Prabhupada that what is required for me to become Krishna Conscious?
Posted by: Real Estate Consultant and Advisor – Delhi & NCR on: February 25, 2009
A young hippy asked Srila Prabhupada, “If our purpose is to go back to Godhead, why is Maya so strong?” Without the slightest hesitation Srila Prabhupada profoundly and poetically answered, “Because your purpose is not strong.”
In other words Maya, the Lord’s illusory energy, only has power over us to the extent that we are not determined to go back to home, back to Godhead. If we are determined to become fully Krishna conscious and not take birth here again in this material world, the material energy will be powerless to do anything to stop us from achieving our goal.
So instead of being weak in our determination, we must become powerful in our determination. How to do that? Srila Prabhupada taught us that over-indulgence in sense-gratification, especially sex life, makes us weak in our determination. This is why one of the most important regulative principles followed by a Krishna conscious person is “No illicit sex life.” By limiting our sexual activities only to procreation we gain a great power of determination that makes us solidly fixed on the transcendental platform.
The great example of a devotee so fixed is Srila Haridas Thakur. He was engaged in chanting 300,000 names of God daily in a secluded hut. This was about 500 years ago in India. The Muslim political leaders were not happy to see that a converted former Muslim had now become recognized as a great Vaisnava saint. So they conspired to ruin his reputation by sending a beautiful prostitute to seduce him in the dead of night. The prostitute undressed herself before the sage and begged him for sexual intercourse. He tactfully told the lady that first he had to finish his chanting and he would then satisfy her desire. So he chanted all night without fulfilling her desire on the plea of not having finished his chanting. He then apologized telling her to come again on the 2nd night, that he would then satisfy her. The same thing happened on the 2nd night because he still had not completed his chanting. This time he assured her that if she came again on the 3rd night he would definitely fulfill her desire. On the third night the prostitute had become so purified by hearing the constant chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra from the lips of Haridas Thakur that in great shame she fell at his feet and begged forgiveness by having tried to pollute him. In this way by the great determination of Haridas Thakur to remain firmly fixed in his vows of chanting, he was able to withstand the attack of the material energy in the form of the prostitute.
Even if we are not so strong in our determination to chant 300,000 names of God daily and spend three nights all alone with a naked beautiful young prostitute without falling down, at least we can we chant 16 rounds daily and strictly follow the four regulative principles:
1. No illicit sex
2. No intoxication
3. No meat eating
4. No gambling
This will give us sufficient strong to remain fixed solidly in Krishna consciousness 24 hours daily and become fully qualified for going back to home, back to Godhead at the time of death.

Hare Krishna Maha-mantra
Srila Prabhupada once announced, “The chanting of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s name is more essential than the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.” (1) One smart devotee then inquired whether we should therefore chant rounds of the Panca-tattva mantra to which Srila Prabhupada replied, “No — because Lord Caitanya’s instruction was to chant Hare Krishna.”
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
The Hare Krishna maha-mantra is a very simple mantra consisting of only three words: Hare, Krishna, and Rama.
Hare means unto Mother Hara (i.e. Lord Krishna’s personal pleasure potency, Srimati Radharani).
Krishna means the all-attractive Lord.
Rama means the source of all enjoyment.
When we chant Hare Krishna we are praying: “O energy of the Lord (Hare), O Lord (Krishna and Rama) please engage me in Your service!”
Maha-mantra means it is the Great Mantra Of Deliverance.
Lord Caitanya and the Vedas both recommend this process:
hare krishna hare krishna
krishna krishna hare hare
hare rama hare rama
rama rama hare hare
iti sodasakam namnam
kali-kalmasa-nasanam
natah parataropayah
sarva-vedesu drsyate
The sixteen words of the Hare Krishna mantra are especially meant for counteracting the contaminating influence of the age of Kali. After searching through all the Vedic literature, one cannot find a better method.
Footnote
(1) There are offenses to be considered in chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, but there are no such considerations in chanting the names of Gaura-Nityananda. Therefore, if one chants the Hare Krishna maha-mantra but his life is still full of sinful activities, it will be very difficult for him to achieve the platform of loving service to the Lord. But if in spite of being an offender one chants the holy names of Gaura-Nityananda, he is very quickly freed from the reactions to his offenses. Therefore, one should first approach Lord Caitanya and Nityananda, or worship Guru-Gauranga, and then come to the stage of worshiping Radha-Krishna.
One should first take shelter of Gaura-Nityananda in order to reach, ultimately, Radha-Krishna. … It should be noted in this connection that the holy names of Lord Krishna and Gaurasundara are both identical with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore one should not consider one name to be more potent than the other. Considering the position of the people of this age, however, the chanting of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s name is more essential than the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the most magnanimous incarnation and His mercy is very easily achieved. Therefore one must first take shelter of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu by chanting Sri-Krishna-Caitanya Prabhu Nityananda Sri Advaita Gadadhara Srivasadi Gaura Bhakta-Vrnda. (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi 8.31 purport)

Fate can be changed by Krishna consciousness.
Krishna says, “I shall give you protection from all the resultant actions of your sinful life.”
That is fate changed. When you surrender to Krishna,
He takes charge of squaring up all your sinful activities and their reaction.
Surrender to Krishna; then your fate is changed.

Krishna is the Supreme Person, the Godhead. Krishna is the speaker of the Bhagavad-gita, which is recognized throughout the world as one of mankind’s greatest books of wisdom. In the Gita, as it is also known, Krishna says repeatedly that He is God Himself, the source of everything. Arjuna, to whom Krishna is speaking, accepts Krishna’s words as true, adding that the greatest spiritual authorities of that time also confirm that Krishna is God.
Traditions that follow in the line of these authorities have carried Krishna’s teachings down to the present day.
The personhood of Krishna is not an idea invented by human beings naively creating a God in their own image. Nor is personhood a limiting concept when applied to God, or the Absolute Truth. As the source of everything, Krishna naturally has His own personal identity, just as each of us does. The Vedas define God as the one supreme conscious being among all other conscious beings. He is infinite, we are finite, and He maintains us all.
Naturally, the best way to understand God is to learn from Him. In the Bhagavad-gita (“The Song of God”), Lord Krishna—a real person—tells us that He is God and reveals many things about Himself.
Many people have a hard time conceiving that God can be an actual person. But the Vedas tell us that God’s unique personal identity is His highest aspect. Here’s an analogy to show how God has three main features.
Looking at a mountain from a distance, we can make out only its size and shape. This is compared to comprehending God only as Brahman, His impersonal energy, which emanates from Him just as light shines out from its source.
As we move closer, we’ll start to make out more of the mountain’s characteristics—the colors of its foliage, for example. This is compared to understanding that God is within our hearts as Paramatma, or the Supersoul.
Finally, when we arrive at the mountain we can explore its soil, vegetation, animals, rivers, and so on. This is compared to understanding God the person, or Bhagavan.
Bhagavan is the source of Brahman and Paramatma and is therefore, in a sense, one with them. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan are called the three phases of the Absolute Truth.
As with anyone in our experience, God is unique and complex. He’s the transcendental Supreme Person, so there’s infinitely more to know about Him than anyone else. The Vedas, especially Srimad-Bhagavatam, supply detailed information about Him.
Everything about God is fully transcendental, or spiritual. Because God is absolute, there is no difference between Him and His name, form, activities, qualities, and so on. Contact with any of these gives the same spiritual benefit, namely purification of our consciousness.
Transcendental Form – The Vedas tell us that spirit is composed of eternity, knowledge (or consciousness), and happiness. Both God and we souls possess spiritual forms, which are free of the limitations of material form. For example, each part of a spiritual body can perform the function of any other part.
Krishna’s body never changes; He is an eternal youth.
Unlike we ordinary souls, who may possess a material body, Krishna and His body are always identical.
A Description of Krishna – The Vedas describe Krishna in this way: He is a beautiful youth with a glowing complexion the color of rain clouds. He plays a flute, attracting the hearts of all. His cheeks are brilliant, His smile enchanting. He wears a peacock feather in His curly black hair and a flower garland around His neck. His beautiful garments are the color of lightning. His toenails resemble the light of the moon.
Not only do the Vedas tell us what Krishna looks like, but pure souls have received His audience and written of their encounters. And fifty centuries ago, Krishna revealed His transcendental form to residents of India when He lived there for 120 years, sometimes showing and sometimes hiding His divinity.
Krishna is loving by nature. In our original pure state, we love Him fully. In the exchange of complete love, Krishna considers His devotees greater than Himself. In the spiritual world He always stays with His devotees, and in this world He resides in every heart as the Supersoul. He wants His children in the material world to return to Him to enjoy with Him eternally.
Krishna is completely independent, and we cannot comprehend him completely. He cannot be conquered by knowledge. But He can be conquered—and seen directly—through pure love.
God has feelings: He is satisfied when someone offers Him a nice prayer. Even though He is great, He can be moved by our love. He responds to us according to how we approach Him.
“The pure devotee is always within the core of My heart, and I am always in the heart of the pure devotee. My devotees do not know anything else but Me, and I do not know anyone else but them.” —Srimad-Bhagavatam 9.4.68
Understanding that God is spiritual, people sometimes conceive of Him as having no qualities. But although Krishna has no material qualities, He is full of unlimited transcendental qualities, and those qualities attract us to Him. Thus great souls who have given up everything cannot give up attraction to Krishna, and they dedicate their lives to finding Him.
The following qualities are considered especially attractive, and Krishna possesses them in full: beauty, wealth, fame, influence, knowledge, and renunciation.
Being God, Krishna has innumerable qualities and seemingly contradictory qualities are resolved in Him.
Hearing of how Krishna shows these qualities can give us a sense of His greatness and of His power to attract all souls.
While Krishna’s expansions and incarnations perform duties in the material and spiritual worlds, He Himself simply enjoys with His most intimate devotees in His transcendental home, known as Goloka. By His desire, His associates there don’t even consider Him God. They enhance His enjoyment in five loving moods: neutrality, servitude, friendship, parental affection, and conjugal love. In other words, Krishna’s life is filled with unending bliss in the company of His associates.
Krishna enjoys Himself with abandon, frolicking as a youth in expansive fields and forests with His friends and cows. He dances, He plays His flute, He relishes whatever activity strikes His fancy at the moment.
To entice souls in the material world to join Him in Goloka, Krishna comes to this world periodically, as He did 5,000 years ago, and shows His confidential, intimate loving exchanges with His ever-liberated devotees.
Krishna savors diversity from various kinds of pure, transcendental love. As we enjoy a variety of relationships in our families and society, so does Krishna, but all of His relationships are eternal, transcendental, and completely free of material contamination.
Each of Krishna’s devotees interacts with Him in one of five primary relationships. In ascending order of intimacy, these five are neutrality, servitude, friendship, parental affection, and conjugal love. Each includes the primary sentiments of the ones before it, and then adds its own flavor. Pure love of God reaches its summit in romantic exchanges with Krishna.
Each devotee eternally feels one of these main moods predominantly:
Although Krishna is invisible to us in our present state, we can perceive His presence through His energies, which are everywhere. Although innumerable, His energies fall into three primary categories.
Internal Energy – Krishna’s internal energy expands as the spiritual world in all its variety, including His ever-liberated associates there. The internal energy is eternal and full of knowledge and happiness. Presently beyond our perception, the spiritual world makes up most of reality.
External Energy – Krishna’s external energy consists of all that is matter: the material world, the laws of material nature, material bodies, and so on. The external energy is temporary and full of ignorance and suffering. It is inert by nature and must be moved by spirit. The material world is a tiny fraction of God’s creation.
Marginal Energy – We finite spirit souls are expansions of Krishna’s marginal energy. We can choose to live in the spiritual world or the material world. Or, to put it another way, we can be deluded by matter or illuminated by spirit.
Both the external energy (matter) and the marginal energy (we souls) can become fully spiritualized by contact with the internal energy through acts of devotion to Krishna (Bhakti-yoga).
God owns everything, so in a sense His home is everywhere. But He Himself resides in the spiritual world in a place known as Goloka, the highest spiritual region. Reaching Krishna there is the highest achievement of human life.
Goloka is self-illuminated, and everyone there is liberated, shining with pure love for Krishna. Because Krishna is the center of everyone’s heart, there is complete unity and peace. Goloka is built of transcendental gems that yield whatever one wants. The natural surroundings are beautiful, full of diversity and opulence. In Goloka, every word is a song, every step a dance, every moment new, fresh, and exciting.
Just as we may have different names according to our various roles—Mommy, Dr. Jones, Sweetheart, Professor, Your Honor—so does God. And since God is unlimited, He has innumerable names.
The names can be generic terms, such as “God” or “the Absolute Truth.”
They can be in Sanskrit, such as Govinda, Gopala, or Shyamasundara.
They can be in other languages, such as Yahweh and Allah.
The name Krishna, which means “the all-attractive One,” implies that each of us has an eternal relationship with God and we are always drawn either to Him directly or to His energies.
God and His names are identical, so by speaking them we enter His purifying company. Regularly reciting, singing, or chanting His names awakens our innate love for Him and gains us release from bondage to matter.
In contemplating the above, the reader may ask, “Where are you getting this knowledge from?” Apart from Sri Krishna’s own words in His Bhagavad-gita, the ancient Vedas (scriptures) of India extensively describe God in detail, His expansions, incarnations and pastimes.
The Vedas deal with many subjects. They are the books of a highly developed civilization and cover all departments of knowledge. Among them, Srimad-Bhagavatam (also known as the Bhagavata Purana) deals exclusively with subjects about God. Srimad means “beautiful” or “opulent,” and Bhagavatam means “related to God.” Hence, Srimad-Bhagavatam can be translated as “The Beautiful Story of God.”
Srimad-Bhagavatam describes God, our relationship with Him, and the process for realizing that relationship. Its 18,000 verses give detailed accounts of God’s names, forms, nature, personality, devotees, activities, residences, and much more.
In one of the opening chapters, the narrator explains that the sage Vyasadeva, who wrote portions of the Vedic literature and compiled the rest, felt dissatisfied despite his accomplishments. Under the order of his guru, he then embarked on writing Srimad-Bhagavatam, considered the ripe fruit of the tree of the Vedas.
